Attention to Strict Parenting, Children Could Be Affected into Mental Disorders

There are many reasons why parents criticize their children. One of them may be because parents see it as an obligation, so that children can be better. But sometimes, unwittingly, the criticism made by parents makes the child feel judged. This is what must be considered because if not done carefully, what the parents say can cause mental disorders in children.

Reported by Scientific American, a survey conducted in 2015 showed that the pattern of care that is too much to criticize can trigger anxiety disorder (anxiety disorder) in children.

For the survey, researchers asked 4,000 adults of all ages to share their childhood memory. Then, the researchers linked it to the participants' mental health reports. The results show that children who have authoritarian parents tend to be more difficult to deal with failure in adulthood.

Too often criticize, have an impact on the child

Greg Hajcak Proudfit, a clinical psychologist at Stony Brook University, said that authoritarian parenting will indirectly train the child's brain to exaggerate every mistake, even the smallest. This is what then can trigger anxiety.

Other studies show that parenting that gives too much punishment and criticism may play a role in prolonged ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in children, as quoted from the Guardian.

For three years, a group of researchers from Florida International University studied 388 children with ADHD - and their parents. In the study, researchers recorded the parents were talking to their children for five minutes, then the results of the recording were made into an analysis.

The researchers then found an association between habits often criticizing children with ADHD symptoms that are sustainable. They add that reducing the portion and degree of criticism can help reduce symptoms of ADHD in children. However, researchers did not mention parental care as a cause of prolonged ADHD symptoms.

Give the right criticism

According to dr. Sepriani Timurtini Limbong from KlikDokter, bad way of delivering criticism could have a negative impact on children. As a result, the child becomes moody, not confident, afraid to try new things, even experiencing protracted liver pain.

"If you want to criticize a child, convey it clearly. Avoid words that judge and hurt, such as' you are naughty, 'you stupid', and so on. It is better to clearly state the child's mistakes, such as 'hitting a friend is not a good thing because it will hurt him".

Avoid criticizing when you are still feeling upset with your child. "Sense of anger often masks your good intentions." After all, if spoken well, the child will be easier to hear and accept. Ever, right, children become even more angry when you criticize them while angry?

Authoritarian parenting that tends to punish, judge, and criticize children is not ideal. If you do not agree with the behavior of children, express criticism firmly but still full of love. Especially for children who are still in growth, too often criticize the child with a sharp can actually trigger mental disorders such as anxiety disorders in the future. So, once again, pay attention to the words that you will use before saying it to the child.
